Boko Haram bombing of Nigerian church kills 20

Bauchi is the state just east of center in Nigeria.

PRAYER ALERT: On Sunday, June 3, a car carrying a bomb crashed through a police checkpoint. It exploded in front of Living Faith Church in Bauchi, Nigeria. At least 45 churchgoers were wounded and 20 were killed. The Muslim terrorist group Boko Haram immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. This brought their total killings to 360 in 2012 alone. In 2011 Boko Haram killed 504 people, including 37 at a Catholic church bombing on Christmas Day. At that time Boko Haram spokesman Abul Qaqa proclaimed, “I am informing all Nigerians and the rest of the world that there is no doubt that we committed that act and God willing we will carry out further attacks.” He added, “There will never be peace until our demands are met. We want all our brothers who have been incarcerated to be released; we want full implementation of the Sharia system and we want democracy and the constitution to be suspended.”

Boko Haram members often boast of their killings. They now threaten devastating attacks on media houses which under-report their activities. But today a new coalition of prominent elders and leaders in the highly volatile northeast region called on Boko Haram to end its bloodbath and engage in dialogue. As we have reported before, many fear a resurgence of the civil war between the predominantly Muslim north and the mostly Christian south. This war broke out in the 1960s following independence from Britain, killing more than three million. Since 1960 churches have grown exponentially, and more than half of Nigeria’s population of 160 million are now Christians. A long period of rule by Muslim dictators ended in 1999 with the election of a Christian as president. Since then democracy has spread. A second Christian president, Goodluck Jonathan, now leads the nation. But Muslim leaders have imposed sharia law in twelve northern states. With Boko Haram, they are demanding a new constitution imposing sharia law on the rest of the nation.

PRAY WITH US: Father God, You are Creator, Sustainer, Redeemer and Judge of all peoples. We thank You for giving Your Son to die for our sin, so that we may live forever with You. We praise You for revealing that life to 160 million Nigerians. To those who fight against You for the sake of Allah, expose Allah as a false god who comes only to steal and kill and destroy. You alone are worth living for and dying for. Show Boko Haram and all Muslim terrorists the difference between killing for hate and dying for love. Turn persecuting Sauls into evangelizing Pauls. You have begun a great work in Nigeria. Help Your people overcome the Boko Haram terror campaign and carry on Your work to completion. Let the blood of Christian martyrs be the seed of more abundant life and growth in Your church. Let Jesus in them show Himself greater than any power that is in the world. Let Your government and peace increase in Nigeria. In Jesus’ name, amen.
