Iranian Cyberattacks Aim at US Economy

On October 11 US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told business leaders in New York City that foreign Internet hackers are planning to attack US utility plants, transportation systems and financial networks in order to cause widespread panic, death and destruction. Iranians succeeded in launching such an attack against Saudi oil companies in the Persian Gulf on August 15, likely because the Saudis joined the US in pushing for stronger sanctions against the Iranians. They used the Shamoon virus to replace crucial system files with the image of a burning US flag, rendering more than 30,000 computers useless. Iran plans further cyberattacks in retaliation not only against the US-led sanctions that are weakening its economy, but for the US and Israeli cyberattacks in 2010 that destroyed one-fifth of the nuclear centrifuges that Iran uses to enrich uranium, setting back Iran’s nuclear bomb development.

China and Russia have even greater cyberwarfare capabilities than Iran, and they are suspected of numerous thefts of intellectual property and attacks on US companies and government agencies. Panetta warned that the US may launch preemptive cyberattacks against any nation that is aiming such attacks against the US. The US State Department is already spending more than $3 billion a year in cybersecurity, and Panetta urged business leaders to prepare for such attacks as well (see links below for more). Extensive cyberwarfare against the US would also devastate many other nations. In Belize, for instance, the US provided 47.9% of merchandise imports and accounted for 49.1% of merchandise exports in 2010. But God can provide greater provision and protection.

PRAY WITH US: Father God, You know all things and You work all things for the good of those who love You. You have plans to prosper us and not to harm us. The swift and massive increase in internet capabilities, for global good or global harm, has not escaped Your notice. We declare You as sovereign over the billions of daily internet communications. Forgive us for our trespasses on internet, and lead us in Your paths of righteousness. We ask that Your great search engine, the Holy Spirit, who searches all things, even the deep things of God, would search out and destroy all plans to steal and kill and destroy via the internet. We declare those plans are the devil’s work, and that You came to destroy the works of the devil. The global economy is fragile, but You are all powerful to protect it. We ask at the same time that You work in Your gracious way to direct our reliance from the kingdoms of this world to the kingdom of the Lord. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
