PRAYER ALERT: On July 6 jihadist Boko Haram militants set fire to a secular school in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Yobe. Twenty-two students were killed, some being burned alive. The rest were shot to death as they fled. Since June at least 48 students and 7 teachers have been killed, according to the UN Children’s Fund. Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau boasted of the attacks and threatened more.We are going to burn down the schools, if they are not Islamic religious schools for Allah,” he said. The name Boko Haram means “Western education is forbidden” in the Hausa language.

President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian, has maintained a state of emergency in four northeastern states. He has sent thousands of troops to the area in the past two months. But the Islamic grip on northern Nigeria is so strong that Boko Haram still operates with relative impunity. Sharia law has been illegally established in twelve northern states. In its 12-year-long battle to overthrow the government Boko Haram has burned hundreds of churches and killed more than 10,000 Nigerians. Yet the Obama administration has refused to label Boko Haram a terrorist organization. Instead it has pressured the Nigerian government toward appeasement, even after Boko Haram turned down an amnesty effort. Shekau has clearly stated, “We will not enter into any agreement with non-believers or the Nigerian government.” He has also warned “Christians all over the country [must] embrace Islam or they will be attacked.”

Nigeria is a key link in an east-to-west chain of nations across the middle of Africa, where northern Muslims are battling to take over the mostly Christian south. And Nigeria is where this battle is most fierce. The Clarion Project calls Nigeria “the deadliest place on earth for Christians.” Pray that Nigeria’s 81 million Christians—more than half its population—will overcome the spiritual and physical warfare that Boko Haram has inflicted on them.

PRAY WITH US: Father God, You are great and greatly to be praised. We thank You for so loving the world that You sent Your Son to be our Savior and Redeemer. We lift up to You the continent of Africa. We praise You for the mighty work You have done there. It has resulted in the increase of Christians from 8 million to 504 million since 1900. We thank You that You have raised Africa up to lead the Global Day of Prayer movement. We now return those prayers to Africa, that many of Your blessings may fall upon their heads.

Show great favor to Christians in the chain of nations in the middle of Africa. They are holding back a flood of evil from the mostly Muslim north, which intends to sweep over the South. Raise standards against them of praise and prayer and preaching and power encounters. Arise with them and scatter Your enemies. Count the blood of the 10,000 Nigerians killed by Boko Haram to be precious in Your sight. As Your people lift You up in prayer, let there be a revelation of Jesus Christ to Muslims like never before. Show that Allah and Muhammad can in no way compare with Christ. He is the desire of the nations. And establish a peace in Nigeria and central African nations that overflows their borders. Let Your enemies’ weapons not prosper and let their boastful words fall to the ground. Be the last Word in every encounter and negotiation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
