Belize teachers protest pay, PM promises raise

Belize teachers protest

Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow

BELIZE JOURNAL, Pt 2.  The Belize teachers protest rally took place as planned on March 7. But many teachers opted to stay home. The government’s threat to deprive them not only of one day’s pay, but of pay for Saturday & Sunday too, was certainly a factor. But nearly 1000 teachers did march down Belmopan’s Ring Road to demonstrate on the steps before the National Assembly. Inside, Prime Minister Dean Barrow was making his 2014-2015 budget presentation to the House of Representatives. It included a minimum 5% salary increase for teachers and public officers.

But Teachers’ Union VP Adelaida Guerra demanded a commitment to that in writing. And the union’s president Luke Palacio emphasized that all ten branches of the union present at the Belize teachers protest showed solidarity with this demand. This event was the climax of a month of Teacher’s Union rallies held in major cities in all six districts of the nation. The teachers of Belize have spoken. What can the nation learn from their impasse with the government?

PRAY WITH US: Father God, all knowledge and authority belongs to You. You have established authorities over this nation, which is in such great need of Your righteous authority. You have also established teachers for this nation in such great need of Your righteous teaching. You have given all authority to Your Righteous Son Jesus. And He commissioned us to make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey everything He commanded us. So make Your authority known to our authorities. Make Your teachings known to our teachers. Make Your discipleship known to our students.

You are the only way out of the lawlessness, immorality, ignorance and poverty that Belize finds itself in. You have plans to prosper us and not to harm us. Provide the salary increases that the government has promised. Ensure that these increases go to public servants and teachers and not to corrupt political practices. You say that “Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor.” Support the teaching of Your word in our schools. Cause the words of the homosexual agenda to fall to the ground. We thank for the Christian foundation that You have given so many schools in Belize. Move on them to build on that foundation and no other. Make them cities on hills which cannot be hid. And release student disciples from them, who will make more disciples.

Raise them up as women of God and as men of God. Make them into Your image. Make them into wives and husbands, and into mothers and fathers, who will train up their children in the way they should go. Turn parents’ hearts to the children, and the children’s heart to them. Lift the curse off this nation, and put it on the cross instead. Command a blessing on the future generations of Belizeans. In Jesus’ name, amen.
