Kherson Province is the Crimea Peninsula’s link to Ukraine

PRAYER ALERT: The May 25 Ukraine elections are drawing near. But many fear that Russia will preempt the Ukraine elections by invading the eastern, Russian-leaning half of the country first. Russia has been massing troops and armored vehicles at its border with Ukraine for weeks. Russia has already annexed Crimea after a vote widely condemned by the West. In its takeover Russia seized dozens of installations in Crimea worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Included was Ukraine’s navy headquarters and three fully-equipped warships.

Russian troops have even moved six miles north of Crimea to seize a gas distribution center in the eastern Ukraine province of Kherson. Pro-Russian activists are already urging Kherson’s town and city councils to hold votes to join Russia peacefully. But Russia may decide not to wait for those votes and seize more utilities in the province of Kherson by force. Crimea still depends on Kherson for utilities and food transport until Russia builds more infrastructure on the peninsula.

Ukraine in turn depends largely on Russia for natural gas at a discounted price. The price for it is expected to rise 40% now that Ukraine is making economic ties with Europe. Europe itself depends on Russia for much of its gas and oil. But Russia also depends greatly on Europe for gas and oil sales. In view of these economic realities and increasing sanctions, will Russia abandon the temptation to take more of Ukraine by force? Will it let Ukraine elections take their course instead? Or will Russia fight with Europe for domination over Ukraine? Will there be trade wars, and more? Cyberwarfare has already commenced. Preparations for armed war are underway…
