BELIZE JOURNAL, Pt 2: For eleven years Tree of Life has had a storefront ministry in the most populous neighborhood in the village part of Caye Caulker island. We call it an outreach center. At one time or another we have reached just about every child in the neighborhood. We have seen move after move of God. Kids have gotten filled with the Spirit and suddenly caught on fire to pray, to seek God’s answers to their lives in the Bible, and to testify of miraculous healings and of power encounters with Him.
But eventually pressures from peers would quench the Spirit. The move would end. Kids would tire of being pioneers in the ways of the Holy Spirit. They would tend to sit back and be spectators, or become otherwise distracted. This pattern has been repeated often in Caye Caulker and in Belize. An experience with God would be treated as a special event, not as a daily reality.
We want to move from an entertaining mode to a training mode. In fact leadership training has always been high priority. But praise songs, Bible stories and testimonies can turn into entertainment for kids who settle for being spectators. And an outreach ministry which is open to all comers can too easily shift into a performance mode.
PATHWAYS. We now want to have a series of training sessions, called Pathways, by invitation only. We want to go to Caye Caulker kids and their parents and make stronger heart-to-heart connections. We want to say: for the next 6-8 weeks we have a goal. We are inviting kids to commit themselves to come on time each week and engage in a Pathway toward that goal. For instance, for 6-8 weeks our Pathway can be “Growing as a Child of God in God’s Family & My Family.” At the end of the 6-8 weeks we’ll go to the parents and ask what difference that training has made in their kid’s life. How are they different as sons and daughters and brothers and sisters? What evidence do you see of God at work in their lives?
We can do the same with Pathways like “Making Wrong Things Right in My Life” and “Fruit of the Spirit” and “How to Share My Faith” and “How to Give My Spiritual Gifts to Others”. We can have kids share each week how they applied the training at home, in their neighborhood and at school. We can give kids lessons that they can share with their families. We can give kids increasing responsibility to become leaders of our training sessions. We can expect that God will move on the parents too, to stir hunger for more of God in their lives. And we can expect that schoolteachers will take notice of the difference in their students, and want more of God in their classrooms.
We look forward to raising on this foundation a miracle school as a powerful alternative to the current malaise of Belize education. Until God gives the green light for that, we will keep doing what we can to train kids up in the way they should go, and praying for more and more of God in all Belize. This will mean a major paradigm shift for Caye Caulker and Belize. But with God all things are possible!
PRAY WITH US: Father God, You are love. Teach us how to love, because You loved us first. You are our Maker and Father. Teach us how to be children who grow up to be fathers and mothers like You. You are our Lord & Leader. Train children up to lead the future of Belize by Your Spirit and Your truth. Turn the hearts of parents toward the children. Show that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender “love” and “marriage” and “family” are terrible counterfeits of Your good design. Change the discussion from legitimizing homosexuality to healing it.
Restore sexually broken people to wholeness. Restore broken families to become families like Yours. Knock on school doors until someone hears Your voice and opens the door. Come in and share Your wisdom, love, and direction to the future leaders of Caye Caulker and Belize. Make them into miracle schools that exalt You. For from You and through You and to You are all things. And in You are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and understanding. In Jesus’ name, amen.
