PRAYER ALERT: Since the Ebola outbreak began in February, 887 have died in West Africa. There is no vaccine to prevent it. Until last week, there was no proof that any treatment could cure it. Then two American missionaries were infected while trying to stop the Ebola outbreak in Monrovia, Liberia. They asked for prayer. They received a serum tested only on monkeys till then, and it’s working well so far. But it will be years before that serum can be processed and made available to greater numbers.

In the meantime, what can we do? First, be aware. Ebola outbreaks most often start in rainforest villages in Central and West Africa. They spread when villagers resist western medicine. Health workers are at great risk. Villagers sometimes accuse them of killing patients because only 10% recover. Last month residents of Zango Town attacked health workers who were using chlorine spray on the area. They even tried to set the workers’ car on fire.

And so the disease has spread. This Ebola outbreak is now the worst on record. Cases have even been reported in populous Lagos, Nigeria. It would take only one plane trip to carry it to any country. Still, US President Obama has forged ahead with the August 4-6 U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington, DC. Why? Because the Center for Disease Control has sent specialists to the affected countries to stop the Ebola outbreak. They will screen travelers when they board planes and when they arrive in the US. The UK will do likewise. Ebola expert Dr. Peter Walsh of Cambridge University says, “Ebola is pretty containable with modern methods in modern countries.”

Still, we can take care, especially if we are traveling. We can warn others. Ebola is caught by direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids or corpse of an infected person. It starts with weakness, fever, headache, sore throat and muscle pain. The incubation period is between 2 and 21 days, so symptoms may not show at first. In later stages there are rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, and liver and kidney malfunctions. Such cases should be quarantined so the Ebola outbreak doesn’t spread. About 90% of the cases end in death.

A deadly flu epidemic threatened the US several years ago, with new cases being reported every day. Prophetic minister Bob Jones said God rebuked him for not using his authority to stop it. At a MorningStar Ministries conference in Fort Mill, SC, he shared what God had told him. According to MorningStar’s president Rick Joyner, as soon as the participants repented and commanded the flu to stop, news about further cases vanished from the media.

PRAY WITH US. Father, all power and authority belongs to You. You have given Jesus all authority in heaven and on earth. And He has given it to His body. You have said that Your people, who are called by Your name, can pray in such a way as to heal the land. We thank You for Your incomparably great power for us who believe. Bring the two missionaries to full recovery from Ebola. We thank You for the testimony of conference participants who stopped the flu epidemic several years ago. We ask You to show Your people it is time to exercise the same authority now.

Believing that You will, we agree with them that the Ebola outbreak must end. We agree that the virus must be stopped in its tracks. We agree for miraculous healings of those who have it. We agree on divine protection for those they have contacted. We agree that Jesus came that they may have life instead, and have it abundantly. We agree on the spread of His kingdom instead of the spread of the Ebola outbreak. We agree that death is the work of the devil, and Jesus came to destroy the work of the devil. And we look forward to testimonies of His work through us and our prayers. For He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world. In Jesus’ name, amen.
