BELIZE JOURNAL, PT. 1. To avoid offense to non-Christians, businesses often take Christmas out of Christmas and Easter out of Easter. They call them simply holidays. They forget that “holidays” mean “holy days.” For believers, Easter holy days remind us of of the most important realities on which our faith is based. These realities are both historical and supernatural.

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Peter and then to the Twelve. After that, He appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, brethren at one time, most of whom are still living.” (1 Cor.15:3-9).

Paul could point to more than 500 eyewitnesses of the resurrected Christ. Most of them were alive when Paul wrote this. Any of them could have risen up and denied the truth of Paul’s claim. None did. This alone makes the resurrection practically impossible to refute. How can hundreds of eyewitnesses be wrong? The famous scholar of ancient literature, B.F. Westcott, said:

Taking all the evidence together, it is not too much to say that there is no single historical incident better or more variously supported than the resurrection.

For believers Easter holy days are supernatural as well as historical. They are supernatural because they were prophesied hundreds of years before they became history. Palm Sunday was prophesied in Zechariah 9:9. On Good Friday “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.” Details of His crucifixion were prophesied in Psalms 22,35,69,109; Isaiah 50,52,53; and Zechariah 12. His resurrection on Easter Sunday was prophesied in Psalms 16 and 49 and Isa. 53. So many other Old Testament Scriptures were fulfilled in Christ that He said, “These are the Scriptures that testify about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me to have life” (John 5:39-40).

What Jesus did on the Easter holy days is supernatural because of the supernatural and eternal life He bought for us. The Father has “blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ” (Eph. 1:3). We are blessed because He chose us and made us His children. He redeemed us from bondage and forgave us of sins. He lavished on us the riches of His grace. He gave us His own Holy Spirit to live in us, and to work powerfully through us (Eph. 1:4-14). What He did on these few Easter holy days gave us glorious blessings that last forever.

That is why so many celebrate the Easter holy days. But many more in Belize, and elsewhere in the world, use these holy days for debauchery. “They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ” (Jude 4), whom Easter is all about. “Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you. With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning…” (2 Pet. 2:14).

That is why headlines broadcast the wild hedonism of youth on Spring Break in the Caribbean. That is why Belize has more booze and drug parties than praise and worship celebrations during Easter holy days. The enemy crashes the parties to steal, kill and destroy. The partygoers wake up with hangovers & downers. They find that the murder, theft and rape rate has risen during Holy Week. It’s quite a rude awakening for the victims. Too many wake in hell. The rest expect the Church to have answers. How do we respond?

We should address all seven mountains of influence in the nation. They are Spiritual Life, Arts, Media, Economy, Education, Government, and Family. For Spiritual Life, pray for a greater outpouring of the Holy Spirit to overcome worldly celebrations of the Easter Holy Days. For Arts, pray for more music, dance & visual arts that glorify God and not the flesh, drugs and crime. For Media, pray for people to change the channels, and hear what the Spirit is saying. For Economy, pray against the commercial exploitation of sex and drugs. For Education, pray for the training of future leaders to bring the influence of heaven on all seven mountains.

When school is out, the Government—especially the police—and Families must work together for protection. The police are on high alert for danger signs during the Easter Holy Days. We should be too….
