PRAYER ALERT: On July 11 top Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman escaped from Mexico’s highest security prison. He slipped through a hole in his shower area into a sophisticated mile-long tunnel with ventilation and lighting. His cartel Sinaloa is well known for building tunnels under the Mexico-US border for transporting cocaine, methamphetamines and marijuana. But it is hard to believe that prison authorities could not detect such an extensive construction project right under their noses. Thirty prison employees have been taken in for questioning.

But bigger questions are aimed at Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. Last year’s capture of the top Mexican drug lord had been the crowning achievement of his campaign to dethrone drug kingpins. His administration has arrested or killed virtually all the leaders of the Knights Templar, Zetas and Beltran Leyva cartels. The top leaders of the latter two cartels are in the same prison that housed El Chapo.

In 2001 El Chapo had also escaped from Mexico’s other high-security prison. Pena Nieto said that a second escape would be “unforgivable.” His attorney general at the time, Jesus Murillo, said such a possibility “does not exist.” They passionately denied the need to extradite El Chapo to the US for safer keeping.

Now Pena Nieto’s biggest success has turned into his biggest failure. He launched a massive manhunt including helicopter surveillance, highway checkpoints and the closure of an international airport. But it has not found any trace of the top Mexican drug lord. Two days after his escape, El Chapo is likely back in full control of the Sinaloa Cartel. His fortune is said to exceed $1 billion. Forbes Magazine ranked El Chapo higher than the presidents of France and Venezuela in its list of the “World’s Most Powerful People.” The United States Intelligence Community calls his Sinaloa Cartel “the most powerful drug trafficking organization in the world.” It is deeply involved in the nine-year-long drug war that has claimed about 100,000 lives.

PRAY WITH US: Father God, we exalt You as the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Kings and drug lords have devised a vain thing against You. They have been bound in prison, yet they still take counsel against You and Your Anointed One. They say, “Let us tear their fetters apart and cast away their cords from us!” They are now boasting that they freed the top Mexican drug lord to do their greedy and murderous word. But You sit in heaven and scoff at them. Now speak to them in Your anger, and cause their words to fall to the ground. Terrify them in Your wrath, and let their plans collapse. Let them fall into their own traps and bring them back to justice. Bring those authorities who aided his escape to justice too.

For You have given all authority to Jesus. You sent Him to destroy the devil’s work. You have given Him the nations as His inheritance. Set angelic and human watchman to look over His inheritance in Mexico. Stir up their resolve to reverse this setback. A good work has begun there with the capture of many drug lords. Empower this work, and free more people from their reign of terror. Show them Your offer of a far better life than theirs. Bring Your people together to pray and to turn from their wicked ways so You can heal their land. You have done it before. You have raised up prayer movements in drug-infested cities like Cali, Columbia, brought drug lords down, and released revival. Do it again! This may seem impossible to man. But nothing is impossible with You! In Jesus’ name, amen.
