PRAYER ALERT on Jerusalem Temple Mount. The September 13-15 celebration of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, on the Jerusalem Temple Mount was marred by Palestinian violence. One Israeli man was killed by a rock throwing attack on September 14. Palestinians holed up inside the Al Aqsa Mosque that night. The next day they threw a firebomb and other objects at Israeli police who were trying to dislodge them. The Islamic Movement is planning more attacks there during the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles. The Jerusalem Temple Mount has beens a site of frequent clashes between the Muslims who dominate it and the devout Jews who want to build a temple there. The Temple Institute is now preparing ritual implements in anticipation of offering sacrifices in the temple.
How should the church respond, seeing as how we have a new covenant which has made the temple obsolete (Heb. 8:1-13)? We should keep blessing Israel and honoring the temple like Paul did (Acts 20:16; see 1 Cor. 9:21). We know that the Antichrist at some point will set himself up in the temple as god. But at the end of the Antichrist’s allotted 42 months of authority (Rev. 13:5-8), Christ will return. He will overthrow the Antichrist and destroy him (2 Thess. 2:8). Christ will begin His millenial rule from the Jerusalem Temple Mount. For “the Lord you are seeking will come to His temple; the messenger of the covenant… Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness; and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years” (Mal. 3:1,3,4).
“Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King…” (Zech. 14:16). They will celebrate at least one yearly feast, the Feast of Tabernacles. Any nation that fails to go up to Jerusalem to celebrate that feast will have no rain. “This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles” (verse 19). Even during the millennium, nations that fail to come to the Jerusalem Temple Mount in observance of God-given decrees will suffer some kind of curse.
So the church, anticipating that glorious time to come, should take heart at the rebuilding of the temple. It is the future home of our coming King. We should honor the reinstitution of sacrifices. Soon they will be offered in righteousness, looking back instead of forward to the supreme sacrifice Christ made for us (Mal. 3:4; see Zech. 14:21). Christ the King Himself will oversee and be pleased by these offerings. I believe He also is pleased by much of the attention that is now drawn to the feasts of Israel, the blood moons, and the Shemitah. Not by the legalism and fear that some are spreading. But by the faithfulness of those who seek to discern the signs of the times.
Jesus commanded us concerning the end-times, to “keep on the alert at all times, praying…” (Luke 21:36). When we see multitudes of Christians on the watch for the Shemitah and blood moons, we should ask what God is doing in all this.
PRAY WITH US: Father God, all times are in Your hand. All answers are in Your heart. We thank You for the times You have made the US a force for good in the nations. It precipated the defeat of Hitler. It recognized the new state of Israel. It was blessed as a superpower because it blessed Israel. But the US has increasingly become a force for evil. It has killed 57 million innocent unborn children. It has allowed the sale of their body parts for profit. Almost half of Americans approve of this despicable practice. The US now officially exalts the abomination of homosexuality in “holy matrimony.” It calls evil good, and good evil. It is bringing more curses on itself by shunning Israel and financing Israel’s deadly enemies.
We see the signs of the times which warn of severe judgments. We ask for a period of mercy. We ask for a period of grace. Most of all, we ask for a Great Awakening that will deliver us from the dominion of darkness into the kingdom of the Son You love. Make us a light to the world. Help the nations to see the great blessing Israel will be to nations that bless Israel. Establish the Jerusalem Temple Mount as the chief of the mountains. Make Jerusalem the praise of the earth, so that all nations may stream to it. Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus! In Your Name we pray, amen.
