PRAYER ALERT. Huge interest around the world has been aroused by the concurrence of the Shemitah and blood moons during the past year. One in ten recent Google searches involved the word “Shemitah.” The Shemitah is the 7th year of the biblical 7-year cycle which ended on September 13. According to the law of Moses, “At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts” (Dt. 15:1). In the same year, “the land is to have a sabbath of rest, a sabbath to the Lord… Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards… Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year shall be food for you” (Lev. 25:4-6). Because ancient Israel and Judah did not observe 70 straight Shemitahs, the period of their exile from the Promised Land was fixed as 70 years (2 Chron. 36:20-21).
But why would the law of the Shemitah apply to nations today? Since Christ has fulfilled all ritual laws, Paul called obedience to those laws enslaving. He rebuked the Galatians for “observing special days and months and seasons and years! I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you” (Gal. 4:10-11).
Yet Paul observed special days when he was in the Promised Land (Acts 20:16). “To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law” (1 Cor. 9:21). Since Israel has been mostly hardened to the gospel, it remains under the law. Yet God still promises to bless nations that bless Israel, and curse nations that curse Israel (Rom. 11:25-26; Gen. 12:3).
Since WWII, the US has been blessed as a world economic and military superpower, in part because it has blessed Israel. But in more recent years, the US has waned as a superpower, in part because it is blessing Israel’s enemies. This is one of the dangerous signs highlighted in the book The Mystery of the Shemitah. Author Jonathan Cahn contends that as the US has slowly turned from its Judeo-Christian heritage, it has faced severe financial consequences. “The [five] greatest financial turning points of the past forty years [including the 2008 crash] have been connected to the Shemitah or its wake 100 percent of the time” (p.109)
As this Shemitah ended, Jonathan Cahn noted three striking signs. First, on September 10, a rainbow appeared over the new tower at Ground Zero. Sadly, this biblical sign now carries the overtones of the pro-LGBT agenda. President Obama ordered rainbow-colored lights on the White House to celebrate the Supreme Court’s imposition of gay marriage on all 50 states. Second, on September 11 a storm caused a crane to fall on Islam’s Grand Mosque in Mecca, killing 107. Saudi Arabia banned further work by the construction firm, which is owned by Osama Bin Laden’s brother.
Third, in the past week the US-brokered nuclear treaty with Iran withstood challenges by large majorities in the US Congress to nullify it. Now Iran will get $150 billion worth of lifted sanctions. Iran is the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism. The US in effect becomes the world’s largest financer of terrorism. And Iranian leaders often call for the destruction of Israel and the US. The treaty with the US allows Iran to inspect its own nuclear program. Now Iran has a clear pathway toward developing nuclear weapons for its destructive aims.
These three signs could be interpreted to mean that the embrace of perversion has made the US ripe for judgment. This judgment could come by means of radical jihadists like the Iranians. Or jihadists like ISIS and Al Qaeda members infiltrating the recent flood of Islamic refugees into the West. Though the Shemitah has ended, Cahn says the judgment does not have to fall right away. “As for the timing, God doesn’t have to do things according to our expectations. We must be ready either way.”
The Shemitah and blood moons are signs of trends, and not necessarily sudden occurrences. Mark Biltz was the first to make known to the world the significance of the 2014-2015 blood moon tetrad. It ends September 28. Like Cahn, Biltz sees many current events converging into severe judgments. He too warns us to be ready whether or not those judgment begin to fall on that exact date…
