Iran sanctions to be lifted despite warnings

PRAYER ALERT on Iran sanctions. Tuesday, Dec. 15, the UN nuclear watchdog meets to remove the last obstacles to lifting the Iran sanctions. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is about to unfreeze about $150 billion in Iran’s oil revenues in banks around the world. Yet many troubling questions about lifting the Iran sanctions remain. IAEA has verified that Iran pursued nuclear weapons until 2009. Iran has given only partial or incorrect answers to IAEA questions about its past efforts to design and test nuclear weapons components.

Yet tomorrow IAEA is expected to vote to drop questions about Iran’s previous nuclear activites. If the IAEA lets Iran get away with evasion now, what will stop Iran from cheating on compliance in the future? Already Iran is freely defying UN resolutions. In July Iran Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani violated a UN travel ban by visiting Moscow. The day Soleimani flew back to Iran was July 25, the day that Russia is alleged to have used cyber warfare against the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.

More recently Iran violated two UN Security Council resolutions against testing missiles. On both Oct. 10 and Nov. 21 Iran tested precision guided missiles capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. Those missiles have a range of 1200 miles. That puts Israel within its striking distance. Iran has often repeated its intent to destroy Israel. On Oct. 14 on state TV Iran actually showed off its ready-to-fire medium- and long-range missiles being stored in an underground base. The broadcast said this base was only one of hundreds of underground missile facilities around the nation.

Iran already has enough uranium for seven warheads. It would only take 60-90 days to enrich it to weapons-grade level. How can the UN verify that Iran won’t? Already the UN is allowing Iran to self-inspect without IAEA agents present. Lifting the Iran sanctions and releasing $150 billion now would be tantamount to paying Iran to extend its range. It could target Europe and the US. And Iran has made no secret of its ongoing hostility toward the West. As recently as Sept. 9 Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was still calling the US the “Great Satan.” We must heed Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s warning to the US Congress on March 3 that Iran is a “threat to the entire world.”

PRAY WITH US. Father God, You watch everything on earth from heaven. Nothing in all Your creation is hidden from Your sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before You. And to You we must all give account. You see the underground missiles that Iran has ready to fire. You see the uranium that Iran has to make nuclear warheads for those missiles. You see Iran’s declared enmity toward the West and especially toward Your chosen people Israel. You have allowed many others around the world to see too. Western nations have agreed with Iran to monitor this program. And yet they are covering it up instead of exposing it. They are ready to lift the Iran sanctions. They are about to release massive funds which would feed this monstrous program.

We ask You to forgive their naivete and foolishness of these watchmen. Raise up true watchmen! Blow the trumpet! Sound the alarm! Make the intent to lift the Iran sanctions of no effect. Block up any further funding of the Iran nuclear program. Bring their plans into confusion. Disable their weapons. Turn back Iran’s anti-Israel, anti-West enmity. Release more revival instead. We thank You that revival is already spreading throughout Iran. Pour out Your Spirit on all of them. Overwhelm the religious leaders and the government with conviction and saving power. Show them that Jesus, a Jew, is Lord of all. That He is the desire of the nations. Bring down the dividing wall between Jew and Gentile. And show Iran its destiny in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
