BELIZE JOURNAL, PT. 1 on evangelicals meet. On May 28 history was made. The busy border crossing near Melchor, Guatemala witnessed teams of both Belizean and Guatemalan evangelicals meet for the first time. Recent border shootings March 26 and April 20 resulted in the death of one 13-year-old Guatemalan boy, and the wounding of his father and brother and Belize Defense Force Sergeant Richard Lambey. At this time of heightened tensions the evangelical associations of Peten and Belize agreed to meet at the border for prayer. Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Customs and Immigration officials fully approved that the evangelicals meet as a peaceful and non-partisan confidence-building measure.
Members of our associations had started an acquaintance with one another only three days after the March 26 shooting. The National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB) agreed to exchange news and prayers with the Asociacion de Ministerios Evangelicos de Peten (AMEP), based in Santa Elena. As the border crisis escalated we recognized that God was arranging that us evangelicals meet for such a time as this. We also contacted the Asociacion de Ministerios Evangelicos de Melchor (AMEM). They quickly agreed to join our breakthrough meeting at the border crossing. There we displayed the Guatemalan and Belizean flags side-by-side, with the cross on the Christian flag above both. About 130 participated, including 60-70 pastors.
We opened our time with praise that God was Trading Our Sorrows over the border conflict for peace and for the joy of believing that He had the solutions. NEAB Belmopan Chapter Vice Chairman Richard Smith exhorted us not to underestimate God. He’s the one who brings real transformation and reconciliation. AMEP Treasurer Nelson Larios said there is no border or customs in the Kingdom of God when His people come together.
NEAB President Lance Lewis expressed his gladness that this was a historic opportunity to pray for the healing of our nations. AMEP President Victor Garcia said together we can begin to fulfill Jesus’ prayer to be perfected in unity. In this way we will “let the world know that You sent Me” (John 17:23). AMEM President Alfredo Alarcon declared that together we can be a light that scatters the darkness that has descended on the border. NEAB Secretary George Ferrar called us as two distinct people to worship and pray in a harmony which assures God’s answers to our prayers.
We worshiped Him as the one who opens our eyes, who redeems by His blood, who shows us His ways, and who alone is King who reigns forever…
