PRAYER ALERT on Hurricane Earl. Just after midnight on August 4 Hurricane Earl hit the cayes of Belize at 80 mph. As an eyewitness, I can report that Earl damaged all of Caye Caulker’s east side piers. It tore some to bits. A storm surge dragged poorly-secured boats inland to smash into fences and buildings, or to be smashed by dismembered structures. It was hard to find any beachfront wooden structure that remained intact. Two water taxi buildings rolled off a pier and into the police station yard, one crushing a boat. The Lazy Lizard Restaurant at the Split sank into the sea after its popular seawall collapsed.
Debris made the beachfront an obstacle course. But only one block further inland, Middle Street was clear and homes relatively free of damage. Electricians fixed fallen power lines and restored power at about 6:15 pm. Though many islanders had fled to the mainland, it appeared that most remained to weather Hurricane Earl. Police reported no casualties on Caye Caulker.
Hurricane Earl is dumping up to twelve inches of rain wherever it goes. It swamped crops growing in Orange Walk District. Local farmers lost acres hundreds of acres of corn and rice. Rivers swelled over their banks and endangered nearby inhabitants. Hurricane Earl continues its rampage into northern Guatemala, But it is weakening into a tropical storm as it rumbles toward Mexico.
PRAY WITH US. Father God, You are the Lord of the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them. You have given Jesus all authority in heaven and in earth. And You have given us authority to overcome all the power of the enemy. So we place Hurricane Earl under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We confess that we in Belize have sinned against Him. Corruption and perversion have risen in high places. We humbly ask for forgiveness for our sins. We thank You that Jesus took all our sins and died that we might live.
So in the name of Jesus we take death out of this storm. We command Hurricane Earl to go to the least inhabited places. We tell it to obey the directions of the Creator. God is loving to all He has made. The devil came to steal, kill and destroy. But Jesus came to give us life and life abundantly. Abundantly restore what has been lost and damaged to those who turn to You. Glorify Yourself as a merciful God. And show us how to build new lives on Your foundations. In Jesus’ name, amen.
