Hurricane Matthew blusters through Caribbean

Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew heading north from Columbia.

PRAYER ALERT on Hurricane Matthew. Though dozens of miles away, Hurricane Matthew sent a storm surge that flooded streets in Columbia on Friday, killing one person. Its wind speeds whipped up to 150 mph. That made Hurricane Matthew the strongest Atlantic hurricane since Gilbert in 2007. Gilbert killed 49 people and caused $700 million in damage to Jamaica alone. Then-Prime Minister Edward Seaga said the hardest-hit areas looked “like Hiroshima after the atomic bomb.”

Hurricane Matthew

Forecast for Hurricane Matthew.

Matthew, presently a Category 4 hurricane at 140 mph, now aims at eastern Jamaica. Forecasters expect it to batter western Haiti along the way. Both regions abound with hills where heavy rains can trigger destructive landslides. As much as 40 inches of rain could fall by Tuesday noon on Haiti, where vastly deforested hills could melt down considerably. Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, is still rebuilding after the 2010 earthquake. Also, as much as 25 inches could fall on eastern Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, and on eastern Cuba by Wednesday.

Then forecasters expect Hurricane Matthew to rumble over the Bahamas as a Category 3. Then alongside the US East Coast as a Category 2. It could possibly continue at hurricane force into New England and as far as Canada. But we must pray for God to have the last say. And that His word will be mercy, not judgment.

PRAY WITH US. Father God, You are Lord of the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them. We see Hurricane Matthew raging in the sea as a category number 4. It aims at Haiti, Jamaica, the D.R., Cuba, Bahamas and the US East Coast. It threatens massive destruction in all those countries. But You say that mercy triumphs over judgment. That You have plans to prosper us and not to harm us. You have plans to give us hope and a future. When You warned Israel of judgment, you looked for a man to stand in the gap against judgment.

So we stand in the gap for Your good plans for us. We stand for Your plans to give life, and give it abundantly. We stand against the devil. He comes to steal and kill and destroy. We declare his plans foiled. We stand in the gap and humble ourselves and pray and seek Your face and turn from our wicked ways. Hear from heaven, forgive our sin and heal these lands. Send this hurricane away to uninhabited areas.

Spare Jamaica and the other islands too. Call on them to humble themselves and pray and seek Your face and turn from their wicked ways. Answer their prayers as only You can, Show Jamaica and all the Caribbean that You are Lord. You are far mightier than any hurricane. Take hold of Hurricane Matthew. Drag him far out into the Atlantic Ocean. Tear him to little pieces. In place of his planned destruction, build up these nations on new foundations. Show that You are both Lord of the storm and the God of peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

DailyInsight. God makes some trials so difficult that you can overcome them only with Him (see John 16:33).
