PRAYER ALERT for Trump Israel deal. US President Donald Trump will visit Israel during his first trip overseas. He will arrive on May 22, immediately after Jerusalem Day, the 50th anniversary of the city’s reunification. Trump will reportedly recognize the entire city as the capital of Israel, contrary to plans for East Jerusalem to be capital of a Palestinian state within Israel. In fact he is still considering moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Trump recently went so far as to suggest that Israel remain one state, stirring a storm of anti-Israel denunciations.
Since then his administration has insisted that he would support any agreement between the two sides. Trump told that he’d “love to be a mediator, an arbitrator or a facilitator” between the two sides. The idea of a Trump Israel deal has met with unusual receptivity from both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. During his visit to the White House in February, Netanyahu welcomed the prospect of Trump’s involvement. Likewise during Abbas’ White House visit on May 3, the Palestinian leader praised Trump’s experience as a dealmaker.
Trump acknowledged that an Israel peace deal is known as “perhaps the toughest deal to make.” But he accepted the challenge, saying “let us see if we can prove them wrong.” In fact he held out a “very, very good chance” for a Trump Israel deal. At the same time, Trump said that “there cannot be lasting peace unless the Palestinian leaders speak in a unified voice against incitement to…violence and hate.”
Until now, Palestinian actions have belied their public professions of peace. Will they undermine a Trump Israel deal as they have repeatedly done to deals in the past?…
