PRAYER ALERT on multiple hurricanes hit Mexico. On September 8 a mighty 8.1 quake shook down hundreds of buildings in Mexico, and killed 96. On the next day Hurricane Katia roared into Tecolutla, Mexico with 75 mph winds, dumping 10-15 inches of rain. Then on September 14 Hurricane Max barreled into Acapulco with 85 mph winds, damaging about 200 homes in the state of Guerrero. Now Hurricane Norma is aiming to strike the resort city of Los Cabos at the end of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. The southern peninsula recently suffered the 70 mph winds of Tropical Storm Lidia on August 31, killing four.
For the next eight days many more quakes struck the same area near Juchitan, Oaxaca in southern Mexico. In that city alone 36 people have died. One-third of its homes have became uninhabitable. Many people are sleeping outside for fear that more aftershocks will bring more buildings down.
Juchitan is the heartland of the Zapotec culture, and of the subculture known as “muxe”. The muxe are men who dress and identify as women. They participate in many off the festivals and parties on Juchitan’s cultural calendar. A muxe known as “Peregrina Vera” for instance, was crowned as queen of the muxes in 2014. He likes to wear his grandmother’s handmade embroidered dresses. He was planning to decorate the extravagant muxe float for a December parade. But amid the rubble of the earthquake no one knows when they will be able to stage another festival. Disasters have a way of exposing vanity and bringing people back to the basics of life.
PRAY WITH US. Father God, You are Lord of the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them. You make everything work to the good of those who love You. Death and destruction are the work of sin and of the devil. From the beginning he came to steal and kill and destroy. Jesus came to destroy his works and to build up Yours. So as people seek recovery from the earthquakes and hurricanes, expose the devil’s work. Do not let it be reestablished. Comfort the grieving and give them hope for better things to come.
Begin good works in the Caribbean and Mexico. Show how you work to the good for those who love You. Move those who love You to do more good works throughout the devastated regions. Establish testimonies of Your grace wherever they go. Show people how to rebuild their lives on Your sure and eternal foundation. Let Your kingdom come, and Your will be done in those places as it is in heaven. In Jesus’ name, amen.
