PRAYER ALERT on evangelicals strike back. Part 2 of reprint from In Brazil, art exhibits latest flashpoints in cultural war by Sarah DiLorenzo, Associated Press, with our emphases. There is a similar culture battle over the play “The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven”. It reimagines Jesus as a transgender woman who tells Biblical stories of tolerance. It has been performed more than 60 times during a tour of Brazil. Conservative evangelicals have called it offensive to Christians. They have petitioned courts to ban its performances.

“The performance of this horrific spectacle is equal to the persecution suffered by Christians in the first centuries when they were thrown to wild animals in the arenas of Rome as a form of entertainment,” said one such petition.

One judge granted an injunction, calling the play “disrespectful,” ”aggressive” and “in bad taste.” That decision has since been overturned on appeal. Two other judges have rejected petitions for injunctions.

The contradictory judicial decisions reflect Brazil’s mixed history on questions of gay and trans rights. Since becoming independent, Brazil has never had an anti-gay law on the books. Many, even inside the gay community, consider it a bastion of tolerance. Still, as with so many social issues in Brazil, there are striking contradictions. Sao Paulo boasts the largest gay pride parade in the world. But Brazil also has some of Latin America’s highest rates of violence against gay and transgender people.

Liberal activists gained some traction during the left-leaning Workers’ Party governments that led Latin America’s largest nation between 2003 and 2016. But now conservatives are gaining traction now — aided in part by the fact that corruption scandals weakened the leftist movement.

Brazil’s conservatism has been bolstered by the rise of evangelicals, a heavy-voting group that now accounts for one in five people — up from one in 20 a few decades ago in what is still the world’s most populous Catholic nation. Their fervor has been fed by a tidal wave of political corruption scandals that have led many Brazilians to believe the nation needs moral leadership.

The latest cultural clashes could help shape next year’s election.

A recent poll found that Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right congressman, is running second among prospective presidential candidates. In recent weeks, Bolsonaro has frequently weighed in on the latest controversies. He once said, “Having a gay son means you didn’t spank him enough.” He also addressed the La Bete “pedophilia” art exhibit at the Sao Paulo Museum. “I only have one thing to say to these kinds of people: Scoundrels. Scoundrels a thousand times over.”

Evangelical lawmakers in Congress are pushing to ban abortion in all cases. The Supreme Court has ruled that some public schools can teach religion. A judge has waved aside objections from the nation’s top psychologists in ruling that homosexuality can be addressed with so-called conversion therapy and treated as an illness. But that was knocked down by higher courts. The fight over art is only the most visible battleground of late.

Editor’s note: We must pray for great waves of cleansing and transformation in Brazil before this corruption spreads further.

PRAY WITH US. Father God, we thank You for Your Son Jesus Christ. He is the true desire of the nations. We grieve over Brazil, which has so many people who are called by Your name. Yet for so many years it has allowed the devil to work freely in brazen Carnival parades of pornography and perversion. Now porn and perversion have invaded Brazil’s museums and theaters. In one play they blaspheme Your Son as a transgender. The spirit of the whore of Babylon seeks to intoxicate Brazil with her abominations. But we thank You that You are now moving among the people who are called by Your name.

As they humble themselves and pray, forgive their sin and heal their land. Arise with power, and let Your enemies be scattered. Release the fear of God to cleanse the land. Take down the sex idols in the museums and theaters, and lift up the cross of Christ. Bring conviction to the gay parades, and devotion to the evangelical movement. Turn the hearts of the fathers to the next generation. Spare the children from this corruption. Empower the evangelicals You have set in high positions, and raise up more to guide this wayward nation. Let there be a testimony of great grace where great sin once abounded. Most of all, exalt the true nature of Your Son and draw all men to Him. In Jesus’ name, amen.
