Marijuana Regulation Means Legalization & Future Degradation

marijuana regulationPRAY WITH US about marijuana regulation: Father God, You are both the God of peace and the Lord of hosts. You make wars to cease to the ends of the earth. And You see the drug cartel wars that have plagued Mexico for fifteen years. So cause those wars to cease. Moreover, set limits to how far they can go. And protect lightly-defended Belize from them. Do not let us do anything to attract more drugs and destruction and death. For it is the devil’s work to steal and kill and destroy.

Instead, show us Your plans to prosper us and not to harm us. Give us a better hope and a future for our youth and our nation. Lead us not into the temptation to make drugs legal and more available. Instead, raise up faithful stewards for new growth industries that will be fruitful, profitable and multiply. And show us how to abide in Your good will, that we may bear fruit that lasts, generation after generation. In Jesus’ name, amen.

PRAYER ALERT: Marijuana Regulation Means Legalization & Future Degradation

MARIJUANA REGULATION. Last week the Minister of New Growth Industries Kareem Musa said that he planned to bring up “cannabis legislation” at the next meeting of the Belize House of Representatives. Then he added, “a lot of people like to say you are legalizing marijuana, it’s not that. We are regulating it to ensure that we have an industry in place.”

But this is a semantic dodge. Of course, regulation means legalization. Is legalizing marijuana really going to help Belize recover economically? Here are serious dangers it poses:

1.          To mental health: The more a young person smokes marijuana, the more he or she risks depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. And the more it damages learning ability, critical thinking, problem-solving and memory. Moreover, the more available marijuana is, the more usage and the more damage. So let’s not sacrifice their—and our—future to questionable economic gain.

2.          To the economy: The drug trade degrades our country’s financial status and threatens to end more corresponding banking relationships. Such relationships allow us to participate in the world economy.

3.          To escalate crime: the bigger the marijuana business in Belize, the more that drug cartels will work to get involved. And they have military backing. So they could use their power to influence business and politics in Belize.

Instead of focusing on marijuana as our new growth industry, let’s develop healthy industries. As a result, we will have much better futures for our youth and our economy in a law-respecting society.
