Political Ethics Code Plus Anti-corruption in Constitution?

political ethics code

PRAY WITH US about political ethics code: Father God, we exalt You as supreme Judge and Redeemer. But we confess that like Adam we have sinned. And every sin brings about a further fall into corruption. So we thank You for Your law, which identifies sin, and Your Son’s sacrifice, which pays its price. But we also thank You for Your Holy Spirit and our consciences which lead us out of temptations.

Guide us in making righteous laws for our lands which call evil evil and good good. Show us which laws to put at the constitutional level. Help us to make checks and balances so that each branch of government can work against sin instead of reinforcing it. And most of all, reveal Your saving power to our public officials so they may overcome evils with good. In Jesus’ name, amen.

PRAYER ALERT: Political Ethics Code Plus Anti-corruption in Constitution?

The Andre Perez sexting scandal may become a game-changer. Already the Belize People’s Constitutional Commission (PCC) was considering anti-corruption provisions. Then sexual texts that Blue Economy Minister Andre Perez sent to a local attorney went public. They came with allegations of sexual harassment and possible abuse. Now many are calling for the PCC to put a code of ethics for all public officials in the Constitution.

But Belize hasn’t even enacted the UN Commission Against Corruption that it signed in 2016. We need to put the UNCAC into the Constitution so it becomes the undeniable law of the land. We should enforce its provisions for whistleblowers and independent investigations. Because we can’t trust any government to investigate its own. And we don’t yet have independent judiciary to prosecute such cases. Until we do, judges will wonder if any ruling they make against the government will end their jobs.

The constitutional process presents a rare opportunity to correct systemic injustices. And to hold public officials to account. Otherwise, this week’s scandal will become next week’s entrenched practice.
