PRAY WITH US about legalizing marijuana can impoverish. Father God, You are the Father of the heavenly lights. Every good and perfect gift comes from You. So we thank You for giving Belize this good land. Do not let foreigners and drug lords ruin our soil for their gain. Do not let them ruin our youth’s minds by making drugs so easily available. And do not let them take over our businesses and corrupt them.
Instead, help us find Your plans to prosper and not to harm us. Fill our minds, and those of our youth, with ways to make the most of what You have given us. Turn our youth from drugs to the hope and future You have for them. Reward the good and faithful servants with more. And let all know that You are the one from whom all good things come, now and forever, so they will make You their personal Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
PRAYER ALERT: Legalizing Marijuana Can Impoverish Belize Further
The recent Zoom “Town Hall Meeting” on legalizing marijuana did not allow opposing voices to be heard. But our NEAB leaders have much to say against it. First of all, marijuana damages the mind, especially the memory and problem-solving functions of teens. It also damages the soil, making it unfit for other kinds of agriculture.
Furthermore, the promised regulation of “every single transaction” won’t work if vendors hide some business or bribe regulators. That can easily happen, as it did after Portugal legalized weed. Big money foreigners bought out legal “front door” weed businesses, and sold illegal hard drugs out the back door. As a result, they got rich, and the Portuguese got more and more addicted to costly habits.
In Belize it could get even worse. The more our weed business grows, the more Mexican drug cartels would want to take it over. They would bring more crime and violence with them. Also, they would launder their money. That would cause us to lose more correspondent banking relationships, limiting our ability to import and export.
Belize is already suffering a steep economic decline. So let’s not step over another steep slippery slope into expensive addiction.
