PRAY WITH US about gang violence solutions: Father God, we exalt You as a good, good Father. That’s who You are. You love gang members far more than they know. So show them Your amazing, unconditional love in ways that will change them. For You have changed the hearts and lives of many drug lords and addicts. Bring testimonies their way so they can taste and see that You are really good. And that the quick fixes of drugs and fast money turn out really bad.
Match those who truly respond with pastors and churches who will take them under their wings. And match them with mentors who will train them for productive and fulfilling lives. Make them examples for youth that have followed them into destructive ways. And keep defeating any murderous plans, as You have done for the past two months. Help them learn from You how to be fathers of a generation that loves righteousness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
PRAYER ALERT: Gang Violence Solutions Get Trial in Belize
In 2021 Belize’s murder count rose by 23 to 125, even with a nightly curfew. That included the gunning down of 12 minors. This murder count was not much lower than the pre-Covid level of 145 per year.
So in November 2021, the government initiated the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU). It includes wilderness retreats, conflict resolution, public relations and even customer service. And they gained certificates for completing training programs. It was the first time some of them got cited for anything other than crimes.
During the following two months, only one murder occurred in Belize City—though one is too much. So can we take this as a sign of a turnaround for city gangs? Will they break out of their rut of gang enmities? And relate in constructive ways with each other? Will they follow through on the diverse job training LIU is offering?
But previous programs such as Conscious Youth Development and Restore Belize have tapered off. Government programs have lacked staying power without God. So we must pray that this time, God move powerfully on these young men in ways they can’t deny. Most of all they need a Father, and He deeply desires their hearts. Will the twain meet?
