Spiritual Gifts & 5-fold Ministry: Vineyard & Kansas City Prophets

PRAY WITH US about Vineyard & Kansas City Prophets: Father God, we thank You for Jesus, the Alpha and Omega. Through Him, You have begun a good work in us. You have shown Him to be our Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher. And He has given us these ministries to equip the saints for the work of Your kingdom. So help us to recognize and cooperate with those You have established in these ministries.

Use these ministries to lead us in Your ways and guide us by Your word. Help us to reach the lost sheep, pastor them, and teach them Your ways. Especially show us how to hear the prophetic words You give us, test and evaluate them, and live them out. For Your sheep hear Your voice, and follow You. Lead us in paths of righteousness for Your name’s sake. And as we go, make us witnesses to all the earth of how great You are. In Jesus’ name, amen.

In the 2nd video in our course “End-Time Harvests: Finishing the 5-Fold Work God Gave Us”, we begin covering the recent restoration of the 5-fold ministries. Three of the 5-fold ministries—evangelism, pastoring and teaching—became well-developed by the late 1980s. The Vineyard movement taught worldwide on how spiritual gifts empowered these ministries.

Then the prophetic ministry suddenly emerged when Paul Cain came out of a 20+ year retirement. He announced that an earthquake would strike at the end of his first meeting with Vineyard leader John Wimber. In fact, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake devastated Armenia on that same day, December 7, 1988.

Paul Cain quickly became known as one of the Kansas City Prophets. Under Mike Bickle’s leadership, this intercessory and prophetic ministry joined the Vineyard. They began to teach on the prophetic gifts in the US and other nations.

Though many more of their prophecies had dramatic fulfilments, others did not appear to come true. As a result, this newer ministry struggled through growing pains and controversies.

Then revival struck at the Toronto Vineyard in 1994. But that too produced controversies, especially over the strange manifestations of the participants. Some were uncontrollably laughing, running around or roaring like lions. And this revival spread to many churches in the US and around the world, with the same eccentric behavior.

Many felt that the “Toronto Blessing” and grandiose prophecies were becoming distracting sideshows. But others felt truly blessed and even transformed by these new phenomena. What would the Vineyard do?
