Cartel Hit-Man Allegedly Kills Two Jesuit Priests

PRAY WITH US about cartel hit-man, that God will:

  1. Search out the hidden evils of drug cartels and bring them to light. For no one can hide from Your Spirit, who searches all things. Also keep searching out hidden people-groups, who are so often victimized by cartels.
  2. Protect priests, journalists, tourists and others, especially those who bring real help to the locals. Use priests to bring them to Christ. Use journalists to expose the exploiters. And use tourists to promote the beauty You have created. So use all of them to drive the cartels out.
  3. Help Christians there take and occupy ground there for You. Move on the government to enforce the laws instead of avoid the cartels. And start a season of peace after so many seasons of war. For You make wars to cease to the ends of the earth. In Jesus’ name, amen.

PRAYER ALERT: Cartel Hit-Man Allegedly Kills Two Jesuit Priests

The same remote Sierra Tarahumara canyons that attract tourists also attract cartels. There they can secretly plant opium poppies and marijuana. And kill anyone who opposes them.

That includes two Jesuit priests who had given their lives to serving the indigenous Raramuri people. Not only have the warring cartels Sinaloa and La Linea taken much of the Raramuris’ land. They have competed to control local liquor sales, extortion and kidnapping. And frequent shootouts have forced many to flee this area located south of El Paso.

Moreover, those who stay do so at the risk of their lives. Accounts of those killed include environmentalists, a journalist, a tour guide and even a US tourist.

The accused killer—Portillo Gil—of the two priests, tour guide, and tourist remains at large. In fact, after the baseball team he sponsored lost a game this week, he shot one of the winners. Then he kidnapped another, and set their house on fire. And this happened on the same day he allegedly killed the two beloved priests and tour guide.

Yet President Lopez Obrador continues his policy of “hugs not guns” toward cartels. Unfortunately those hugs have turned into death-grips for many Mexican communities. But that won’t stop more Jesuit priests from reaching indigenous peoples. For they have done so since the 1600s, except for a 130-year ban starting in 1767. So pray that God will show His upper hand over all these indigenous lands.
