PRAY WITH US about Belize & Guatemala revive: Father God, You rule as Sovereign over the nations. But You also establish the authorities over them. Also, You say You have determined the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek You. So affirm the Belize-Guatemala border, and guide the authorities You have now established in those nations. Make the most of the renewed accords between our heads of state. Turn the International Court of Justice dispute into an affirmation of the countries’ respective identities.

Use the revived 13 agreements to set the course for right relationships. Guide the contacts between students, workers, tourists, government officials and especially churches to become more mutually supportive as we all recover from the pandemic. Also, help us work together against common enemies such as drug traffickers, human traffickers and immoral agendas. And protect our health by not allowing viruses or other diseases to spread. But let revival spread and cross the borders with the gospel of Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.

PRAYER ALERT: Belize & Guatemala Revive 13 Agreements

During a June 1-3 trip to Guatemala, Belize PM John Briceno agreed with Guatemala President Alejandro Giammattei Falla to improve their strained relations. The former president, Jimmy Morales, had declared that Belize was “Guatemalan turf.” So he vigorously pursued Guatemala’s claim on Belize at the International Court of Justice.

But Giammattei now promotes a “bilateral relationship” of “both peoples and governments.” This implies acceptance of Belize as a separate nation. Most importantly, they committed to revive and implement all of the 13 Agreements made in 2014. The agreements state they “shall not constitute a total or partial waiver of sovereignty over any territory.”

Belize has just opened its borders but only to tourists. When Belize opens its borders to Guatemalans, many of the 13 agreements will kick in. They involve students and seasonal workers crossing the borders. Also, they set policies for migration, extradition, and prisoner transfer to home countries.

Further agreements cover cooperation in sustainable tourism, sustainable resources, environment protection, electrical energy exchange, and recovery and return of stolen items. The 13 agreements implicitly affirm the border as it now stands. Let’s pray that good border agreements will make good neighbors.
